- Agriculture Pernambuco Agricultural Cooperatives Summer 1969 Draft
- Date
- 1969
- Description
- The Peace Corps - Pernambuco (PC-PE) Agriculture Cooperatives project description was drafted in mid-1968 to request replacements for the first FECOMIPE (Federation of Mixed Cooperatives in the State of Pernambuco) Cooperatives group (December 1967 – December 69) for on-site placement in October 1969. The document was based on six to eight months of experience with the first Pernambuco Agriculture Cooperatives group. The Peace Corps project description was a document required by the Peace Corps bureaucracy to request a group of Volunteers. Since the process of approval, recruitment and training took about nine months, a decision to request a new or replacement group needed to be made one year in advance of expected placement in the field.

- GERAN Training manual
- Date
- 1970
- Description
- The Peace Corps - Pernambuco (PC-PE) Rural Development (GERAN) project description and training outline were drafted in mid-1969 to request a group of Peace Corps Volunteers for October 1970 placement on sugarcane plantations. Pre-service training began in St. Croix, Virgin Islands and in Pernambuco. In-country pre-service training plans were refined based on the experiences of four Volunteers who had worked in two teams on two plantations in a six-month GERAN pilot program starting March 1970. The Peace Corps project description was a document required by the Peace Corps bureaucracy to request a group of Volunteers. Since the process of approval, recruitment and training took about nine months, a decision to request a new or replacement group needed to be made one year in advance of expected placement in the field.

- Gold Mining In Serra Pelada
- Date
- 1985-07-15
- Creator
- Nickelsberg, Robert
- Description
- An overview of the gold mine at Serra Pelada shows between 80,000 to 100,000 miners digging out bags of ore that were carried by hand to the surface in Serra Pelada, Brazil, July 15, 1985. Badly planned mining explorations in the 1980s, including at Serra Pelada, led to serious environmental consequences such as heavy water contamination from mercury. Conflict between prospectors and Indigenous populations who live around the mines remains a persistent issue in the Amazon region.
