- In this letter, Rev. John Gutteridge address the accusations and complaints made about his way of collecting subscriptions for the University. Gutteridge defends his position on collecting subscription amounts by implying that the 100 dollar amounts gradually often turn into thousands. He acknowledges the concerns that Davidson makes however, he emphasizes that until the Trustees can come to some kind of consensus he will proceed to collect subscriptions in this manner.

Spends much of the letter discussing a conference that he spoke at, and what was discussed at the conference, including whether or not there was sufficient money for American University to open.

- Letter to Dr. Davidson from John Gutteridge describing his visit to Dr. David Pingree. They discussed buildings and scholars for American University. Gutteridge writes that he had a good time discussing the university and expected to receive a "check on the spot" but Dr. Pingree said he wanted to look at the documents first and then decide his commitment to AU. Gutteridge writes that Dr. Pingree is worth a million and has no family to leave his money to. Gutteridge stresses the importance of Dr. Hamilton's influence on him. Gutteridge describes his visits with others and records the donations on the fifth page of the letter.
