- Title
- Shono: Ancient Remains at Shiratori Mound/ 庄野白鳥塚古墳(Shono, Shiratorizuka Koseki)
- Creator
- Utagawa Hiroshige/ 歌川広重 (Signature: Hiroshige ga/ 広重画)
- Description
- Nishiki-e (Mutlicolored Print), ink and color on paper. A road lined with pine trees takes up the foreground and runs along the side of a wide river. On the road a group of porters carry large boxes with ornate decorations that indicate they might be connected to a festival or contain sacred objects. These decorations include fans, parasols, and gohei which are the wooden wands decorated with zigzag streamers. These are all used in Shinto rituals. Shiratori mound (Shiratorizuka) mentioned in the title is thought to be the burial site of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, a legendary prince of the Yamato dynasty. It is said Yamato Takeru no Mikoto changed his body into a bird and flew away after burial. This is why the site is called Shiratori which means “white bird.”

- Creator
- Utagawa Hiroshige/ 歌川広重 (Signature: Hiroshige ga/ 広重画)
- Description
- Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. Travelers fight against heavy rain as they walk up and down the steep slope in the foreground. They hide under straw hats, cloaks and umbrellas. On the umbrella of the figure near the bottom right, you can faintly see the name of the print series publisher. Below the hill in the bottom right corner are the roofs of a nearby village. The rain is finely rendered with a subtle layer of ink. In the distance, the gray silhouettes of the bamboo bend under the force of the winds.
