Letter of acceptance from Albert Gleason for the grading contract. Gleason agreed to grade the 76,000 cubic yards extending Massachusetts Avenue through the campus grounds. Gleason quotes the total amount of $17,950.00 for the work, unless rocks must also be removed.

The American University, 1891 November
These handwritten notes describe Hurst's outline for American University. This includes "the four departments of human knowledge" it will teach: "the arts and sciences" "the medical" "the law" and "the theological" and details the main teachings of these four departments. It also includes a breakdown of costs associated with the equipping and endowing of such an education program, using materials which have been collected by federal institutions such as the Library of Congress.

In an undated appeal to the members and friends of the Methodist Episcopal Church nationwide, John F. Hurst answers the question, "Why in Washington." He argues that since George Washington forward, statesmen and educators have advocated for a university in the nation's capital.
